The impact is not uniform. Traditional jobs dependent on repetitive tasks and routine data handling are increasingly exposed to automation and intelligent software tools. Industries ranging from basic administration to logistics are feeling the effects as AI absorbs processes once carried out manually.
However, the rise of AI is not only subtractive; it is also highly generative. Entirely new professions are emerging — including AI systems specialists, machine-learning engineers, data governance experts, intelligent automation designers, robotics coordinators and digital ethics professionals. These roles did not exist a few years ago, yet they are now central to corporate recruitment strategies.
Serbia holds several advantages in this transition. Its strong educational foundation in mathematics, engineering, programming and technical sciences gives it a talent base capable of moving into AI-driven fields. Technology companies are increasingly shifting from simple service outsourcing toward sophisticated projects, creating demand for higher-value expertise.
Yet major challenges remain. Not everyone displaced by automation can easily transition into new digital roles. Reskilling is now a structural necessity. Healthcare, agriculture, public administration and manufacturing are all undergoing transformation, forcing professionals to rethink their capabilities and adapt to human-machine collaboration environments.
This creates a national policy imperative: lifelong learning must become normalised rather than exceptional. Education reform, targeted training, employer-based upskilling, and state-supported transition programmes are essential to ensure inclusive adaptation rather than selective opportunity.
