The total revenue from tourism in Serbia in 2013 was USD 2.5 billion, with the foreign currency revenue at EUR 800 million, Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic said on Wednesday, adding that the data proved the vitality of that industry despite the economic crisis.

Serbia’s foreign exchange revenue from tourism in 2000 was merely USD 20 million, meaning that it increased 50-fold in 15 years, Ljajic told a business conference entitled Sustainable Development and Competitiveness of Tourism in Southeast Europe – SEET 2014.

The export in agriculture was EUR 2.1 billion in 2013, while the automotive industry recorded EUR 1.8 billion, yet those industries received subsidies, unlike tourism, he noted.

She listed Andricgrad as one of the most important destinations in RS and Drvengrad in Serbia, adding that the national parks Sutjeska and Durmitor were shared by RS and Montenegro.

Professor Slobodan Unkovic thinks tourism found its way out of the economic crisis in 2010, although other industries still suffer from that crisis.

Tourism has been growing 3-5 percent annually throughout the world since 2010, which indicates that the growth is sustainable, he remarked.

According to the World Tourism Organization, the industry is expected to grow 4-5 percent globally this year as well.
