The Executive Committee of the United Branch Unions “Independence” (UGS Nezavisnost) decided on Monday that its representatives will withdraw from the Social and Economic Council, saying that they refuse to take part in “the calculated, systemic suppression of social dialogue”.

According to a release issued by UGS Nezavisnost, the Social and Economic Council is not performing either of its duties, and it is gradually, but steadily, turning into one of the Serbian government’s auxiliary services.

The release notes that the Council was established to institutionally develop social dialogue in Serbia at national level, and offer various incentives at local level.

One of the Council’s most important roles is to maintain relations and improve cooperation with national social and economic councils in other countries of Europe, and with the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) which is very important, given that Serbia embarked on the path toward EU membership, UGS Nezavisnost says.

However, the Council is not performing either of the duties, UGS Nezavisnost underlined.
