China’s Yanfeng Automotive Interiors (YFAI) has officially opened a plant at Kragujevac, central Serbia. Logistics played a part in the company choosing the city.

Good infrastructure, availability of skilled workers and proximity to other YFAI plants in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have been cited as the main factors.

“With this new plant in Serbia, we are expanding our manufacturing capacity in Eastern Europe’s growth markets and responding to our customers’ increasing presence in the region,” said Tony Elenbaas, the company’s vice-president and general manager for Europe and South Africa.

The new unit’s production area is about 18,500 sq.m and the factory has created around 180 jobs to date. YFAI plans to gradually take that number up to 800.

YFAI is a joint venture between Yanfeng, one of China’s largest automotive suppliers, and Adient, a major global producer of automotive seating.

Based in Shanghai, the company has 110 manufacturing plants and technical centres in 20 countries. Its product portfolio includes instrument and door panels, floor and overhead consoles, cockpit systems and interior lighting.
