Swedish furniture retailer Ikea received a building permit on Wednesday for the construction of its first store in Serbia.

The permit was presented by Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic to Regional Property and Expansion Manager at Ikea South East Europe Vladislav Lalic, in the presence of Belgrade Mayor Sinisa Mali.

After many years, a construction permit was given to a company that will employ some 300 people, said Mihajlovic, adding that Ikea is known to boost GDP wherever it operates.

“Serbia is a good place to invest and it will be even better in the future,“ Mihajlovic stressed.

Ikea plans to open more stores in Serbia, depending on the success of the first store in Belgrade, said Lalic.

Belgrade Mayor Sinisa Mali said that Ikea’s investment is worth around EUR 70 million, and that the construction is expected to be completed in the course of 2016.
