A thousand of kilometers of new railways in Serbia in next five years

Serbia will receive 1,000 kilometers of new or completely reconstructed railroads in the next five years, Vecernje Novosti reports.

According to the announcements from Serbian Railways Infrastructure, the part from Novi Sad to Belgrade is under construction, in March works will start towards Subotica, and after the proper study is completed, it will be known when the reconstruction of high-speed rails will begin.

Managing director Miroljub Jeftic, the director of the Serbian Railway Infrastructure, tells Novosti that all other projects on the construction of the high-speed railway, except the section from Belgrade to NiÅ¡, will be completed by 2023, and that the current investment in our country’s railway is about five billion euros.

“In the past five years, 227 kilometers of railway lines have been modernized on the most important Corridor 10 through Serbia and on the bar. The work is underway to modernize 134 kilometers of high-speed rail and on Corridor 10, and another 770 kilometers of trunk lines are being prepared”, said Jeftic.

The most significant project is the construction of a high-speed line up to 200 kilometers per hour between Belgrade and Budapest, Jeftic says, adding that the first two sections of the line should be completed by 2021.

With regard to the railway line, it is planned to continue works on sections from Valjevo to Vrbnica, or to the border with Montenegro, with a total length of 207 kilometers, for which 230 million euros have been secured from a new loan from the Russian Federation.

“The design documentation for that reconstruction should be completed by mid-year, with work beginning by the end of this spring or in 2021. It is estimated that this work will take about two years, with an investment value of about 450 million euros”, said Managing director director of “Serbian Railway Infrastructure”.

He reminded that the Government of Serbia, Infrastructure and Chinese companies in Beijing have signed an agreement on the modernization of the Belgrade-Nis-Presevo- the state border line, and plan to build a bypass around Belgrade, from Beli Potok, via Vinca to Pancevo.

Over the past two years, “Serbian Railways Infrastructures” have automated and installed ramps at 22 road crossings, with video surveillance installed at 44, Vecernje Novosti writes.
