Assistant Mayor Andreja Mladenovic presented the project “Establishment of an early warning system for floods on the waters of the second order on the territory of the city of Belgrade”. He pointed out that there are three water areas, 19 first-order watercourses and 192 second-order watercourses.
– The Republic and JVP Srbijavode are responsible for the first row, and the City of Belgrade for the second. Belgrade is a city that has a large number of small streams and rivers, which become torrential rivers during heavy and extensive rainfall. The project is designed to be carried out in several phases. In the first phase, we included eight basins, which is one third of the second-order watercourses. The project envisages two levels of realization, the first refers to hydrological stations that measure the speed of watercourses of the second order, and the second to rain gauge stations that measure the level of precipitation. RHMZ has a lot of hydrological stations in Serbia and on the territory of the city of Belgrade. Rain gauge stations are located in places where they cannot be endangered by external influences. Also, we must have good cooperation with legal and natural persons, but also institutions, in order to allow us to set up rain gauge stations – said Mladenovic, as reported by Beoinfo.
He emphasized that by setting up and installing 20 rain gauge stations, data from the field will be obtained.
– The profession from RHMZ should process that data, and the processed data will then be sent to the Secretariat for Defense Affairs, Emergency Situations, Communication and Coordination of Relations with Citizens, the company Srbijavode and the Emergency Situations Headquarters. Based on these data, we make decisions with other institutions on issuing warnings or taking certain measures, which are important in order to evacuate people and material goods. Two years ago, Barajevo and Grocka were in a very difficult situation. We predicted precipitation, but we could not determine exactly in which part of the city the crisis situation will be most pronounced. With the help of these devices, we will not stop the flood, but we will be able to warn the population in time and take measures to reduce the consequences. In the future, we will be able to send this data to the situation center, for which we already have a project. This system, together with the system of sirens for informing, will contribute to a safer life of citizens, which was our goal – Mladenovic concluded.
Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic and Director of the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute Jugoslav Nikolic signed an agreement on cooperation between the City of Belgrade and RHMZ.
This project is part of a broader project “Strengthening the resilience and readiness of the City of Belgrade to respond to natural disasters and crises,” eKapija reports.
