Milan Bacevic, Serbia’s minister of natural resources, mining and spatial planning, has said that the cooperation protocol between Serbia and Illinois is of strategic importance because it will allow Serbia to boost its economic cooperation with the U.S. state.

The document sends a clear signal that Serbia is open to cooperation with the United States, especially with the state of Illinois which is home to a large Serb community, the Ministry said in a release.
“This agreement is of strategic importance to Serbia, because the majority of the Serbian diaspora in the U.S. lives in this area, and because of the economic opportunities which exist in this part of America. I think the agreement will elevate the cooperation between Serbia and Illinois to an even higher level,” Bacevic said after signing the protocol.

The protocol will also contribute to strengthening cooperation with Chicago, with which Belgrade entered the sister cities program back in 2005. Bacevic and Tomislav Subaranovic, a state secretary with the ministry, will meet in Washington with representatives of major companies and institutes involved in the development of highly sophisticated technologies and various areas of scientific research.

They will try to agree on the priorities for possible cooperation in the mining and metal processing industries and will use the meetings to draw potential investors to Serbia, which is the number one goal of every member of the Serbian government, reads the release.
