Presenting a project “Serbia – a platform of logistics and intermodal transport in the region”, Mrkonjic said that the works on the combined transport terminal, which will be raised in the vicinity of the largest transportation routes – railways, roads and waterways – on the area spanning 180 hectares, have been estimated at €20 million.
Minister for Infrastructure and Energy Milutin Mrkonjic stated that the construction of a modern intermodal terminal in Batajnica will begin in March 2012, adding that the works will take 18 months.
Presenting a project “Serbia – a platform of logistics and intermodal transport in the region”, Mrkonjic said that the works on the combined transport terminal, which will be raised in the vicinity of the largest transportation routes – railways, roads and waterways – on the area spanning 180 hectares, have been estimated at €20 million.
Land expropriation will cost €3 million, and the EU and the World Bank are interested in financing the construction of the terminal, Mrkonjic observed.
The Minister said that thanks to the construction of the intermodal terminal, 1,000 new jobs will be created as the terminal will draw over 100 domestic and foreign companies.
The documentation should be completed by March 2012. The logistics centre will have all the necessary equipment and facilities for loading and discharging goods, as well as a crane, a warehouse and other necessary equipment. Its construction will help to relocate around 50,000 freight trucks from the city centre.
Batajnica was chosen as the best location because of its proximity to the junction of railway and road routes on Corridor 10.
Serbia does not have any modern intermodal terminals, while Europe has around 20, he observed.
Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Adriano Martins and Director of the World Bank Office in Serbia Loup Brefort stressed that Serbia has not exploited its geographical position enough, adding that it may soon become a regional centre of intermodal transport.
