The Movement for the Renewal of the Kingdom of Serbia (POKS) will launch an official initiative for Serbia to abolish the tax on food donations.
According to POKS President Zika Gojkovic, it pays more for large producers and traders to throw away the food they want to donate to the poor, because they have to pay VAT on it.
“It is completely absurd and leads to a situation that harms more than it benefits the budget of Serbia,” Gojkovic said, as announced by POKS.
He reminded that the Government of Serbia, during the state of emergency, allowed an exemption from paying VAT on donated goods to hospitals by a special regulation, and stated that this should serve as an example.
“Also, we propose that an increase in the level of donations be introduced as a condition for tax exemption, which would be of great importance for soup kitchens, centers for social work and the Red Cross,” Zika Gojkovic pointed out, Novi Magazin reports.
