Most of China, but also Russia, took over the works, crediting, but also part of the documentation prepared by the European Union (EU) on some of the most important projects in Serbia, and it is about the modernization of about 400 kilometers of railways that have been deteriorating for decades.
Referring to the data on the EU’s participation in financing the modernization of railways in Serbia, which he received from the EU delegation in Serbia, RFE states that the EU was involved in numerous projects on modernization of railways, for key and longest sections – towards the borders with Hungary in the north and Northern Macedonia in the south.
The EU delegation told RFE / RL that they are still ready to “financially participate in an important infrastructure project for the construction of the railway between Belgrade and Nis”.
They note that they also talked about it with Serbian officials, who, however, as a partner in this project – point out China.
The EU delegation says the 240km-long railway project between Belgrade and Nis is among the key initiatives identified as part of the EU’s Economic Investment Plan for the Western Balkans.
“The EU believes it can offer the best possible conditions for large investments like this. The economic and investment plan for the Western Balkans, which was presented in Belgrade only a few days ago (October 8), is an excellent framework for our future cooperation with Serbia on infrastructure development,” the written statement of the EU delegation in Serbia reads.
RFE, which mentions the Belgrade-Budapest railway and other projects in an extensive text, states that although it is pointed out that “different partners contribute to the overall quality, in Serbia, in the context of railway modernization, projects with China and Russia, whose modernization of the railway is realized through credit borrowings,” Nova reports.
