The Serbian government has decided to introduce import levies on milk and sour milk products to protect domestic production from excessive imports.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Agriculture Minister Snezana Bogosavljevic-Boskovic..

In a statement to Tanjug, she explained that the import levy on milk amounts to RSD 10-20, while the levy on sour milk products is RSD 10-30.

“This is a temporary measure in the context of other measures the state is taking to tackle the disturbance on the milk products market, Bogosavljevic-Boskovic noted, adding that the levies will remain in effect until the end of the year.

Noting that imports of those products in the first five months of this year were around 3.5 times higher than in the same period last year, she said that the measures taken by the Serbian government are in no way aimed at jeopardizing the good relations with the EU in terms of foreign trade.

“We will have intensive contacts with Brussels, with which we are analysing the situation on the Serbian dairy products market and discussing protection mechanisms regarding these agricultural products,” Bogosavljevic-Boskovic concluded.
