Ljajic: No ban on Serbian meat exports to Russia

There is no ban on Serbian pork meat exports to Russia, Serbian Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic said on Friday.

He denied media reports that another shipment of Serbian meat has been returned from Russia, adding that the next ten shipments from the Koteks company will be under particular scrutiny.

This is a message to all exporters and producers that bacteriological, hygiene, sanitary and all other standards must be met to ensure trouble-free exports of meat to the Russian market, Ljajic said.

There is great interest among Serbian producers in exporting meat to that market, and some have already filed requests for export permits, Ljajic told reporters during a break in a session of the assembly of the Serbian Association of Employers.

Following discussions with the Russian side that clarified the problem with Serbian meat exported to Russia, Ljajic said last week that Serbia “escaped a red card” from Russia although it could have been given one. “The case is still under investigation,” he said, adding that the faults identified with Serbian meat exports to Russia can be remedied.

Scrutiny will be much more stringent in the future, and electronic communication will be established with the Russian veterinary administration, Ljajic said, adding that the sequence of moves has now been determined and that, as the first step, Russian experts will come to Serbia to provide training, carry out control and give instructions regarding the exports.
