The Serbian government is conducting reforms even at the time of the economic crisis, and a consistent implementation of small changes should result in major progress in a few years’ time, Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic has said.
In an interview for the latest issue of Cord magazine, Cvetkovic said Serbia is becoming “more organized,” although maybe not fast enough, but there is definitely an improvement and the country is headed in the right direction. The EU still represents a strategic priority for Serbia, despite the unprecedented crisis in the Eurozone, said Cvetkovic.
The prime minister noted that Serbia is in an especially unfavorable position because it is dealing with two negative forces – the economic crisis that is hitting other countries as well, and the incomplete transition process to a free market economy.
“It would have been ideal if we had completed the reforms three or four years ago and faced the crisis from the same starting position as other countries. However, now we have to go through two painful parallel processes,” Cvetkovic said.
