SDS: With Belgrade Waterfront project gov’t shakes Serbia’s legal foundations

The opposition Social Democratic Party (SDS) has stated that with the recent bill that should govern the expropriation of land and the issuance of building permits for the Belgrade Waterfront project, the government is bringing into question Serbia’s legal foundations.

Instead of resolving this issue with changes to the expropriation law, this new lex specialis is being proposed which will be applied to just one investor, which constitutes an act of discrimination and an example of bad legal practice, SDS vice-president Goran Radosavljevic said.

He also posed a question as to what would happen if the Belgrade Waterfront project failed, because if the expropriated land is not used for the stated purpose within the set timeframe, it must be returned.

The SDS urges the government to provide opinions from architects, noting that despite the high importance of attracting investments to Serbia, passing laws just for this purpose is not a solution, but rather illustrates that the government is incapable of solving this important issue in a lawful way.

Such moves of the government speak of the high level of its political and professional incompetence, reads the release issued by the SDS.
