NIS has furthered its modernization efforts across all business segments by acquiring two state-of-the-art robotic drilling rigs, named “Tesla” and “Pupin” in honor of distinguished scientists. These rigs, valued at approximately €33 million, represent one of the company’s largest investments in its oil services segment. The primary objectives of this investment are to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and achieve significant environmental benefits.

Unlike older conventional facilities, the new rigs feature modular designs and have replaced manual operations with advanced robotic systems, leading to much more efficient and safer operations. The rigs are equipped with the latest “EURO 5” drive technology, which minimizes exhaust emissions and reduces noise levels.

The introduction of these new rigs is expected to decrease drilling time by up to 20%. For instance, whereas older rigs required an average of 11 days to relocate to a new site, the new rigs will complete the process in an average of seven days, with some relocations possible in just one day.

Additionally, the new rigs are designed to occupy 25 to 45 percent less space at drilling sites compared to current models, which not only cuts construction costs but also minimizes the environmental footprint by reducing land use.

These robotic rigs ensure synchronized operation, significantly minimizing the chance of errors and enhancing operational reliability. They also feature advanced maintenance capabilities, including preventive systems and diagnostic analysis, further improving their reliability. Employees operating these rigs have undergone comprehensive training, including theoretical lessons and practical sessions using simulators at the manufacturer’s training center.

Ognjen Stupar, head of the Drilling Plant at NIS, emphasized the significance of this technological advancement: “With the acquisition of these new facilities, we have taken a major technological leap forward. NIS oil services will be recognized as a leading and efficient contractor in the oil service industry, both domestically and internationally. The environmental benefits of these new rigs are equally important to us, as are the business advantages. Additionally, these advancements enhance employee safety and expertise.”
