For the first time, Serbia deposited the seeds of agricultural plants in the World Treasury in Svalbard, an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, the Serbian Embassy in Norway announced.
The Embassy assessed that with the efforts of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad, in cooperation with the Government of Norway and the Nordic Center for Genetic Resources “NordGen”, a big step has been made for food security of future generations in Serbia.
“A huge part! For the first time, our country is depositing seeds of agricultural plants in the World Treasury in Svalbard,” the embassy stated on Twitter on Tuesday.
The disposal of ninety-six of our most important domestic varieties of wheat, barley, oats and rye, selected by the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad, will contribute to global efforts to ensure food security for future generations, it was announced on the Embassy’s website.
Over one million seed samples from almost all countries of the world are stored in this unique database, Sputnik News reports.
