Serbia granted approval for direct flights to the US

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced it’s upgraded the Republic of Serbia’ from a Category 2 rating to Category 1.

With Serbia being classed as Category 2 since 2006, the rating is typically given to a country for one of two reasons.

Either the country lacks the laws or regulations necessary to oversee air carriers in accordance with minimum international standards, or that its civil aviation authority is deficient in one or more areas (such as technical expertise, trained personnel, record-keeping or inspection procedures).

Serbia’s upgraded Category 1 status is based on a March 2014 FAA assessment of the safety oversight provided by the country’s civil aviation authority, and an FFAA verification of necessary corrective actions during a follow on visit earlier this month.

The new rating allows Serbian air carriers to secure the requisite FAA and US DOT (Department of Transport) authority to establish service to the US and carry the code of US airlines.

Currently, Serbia has no carriers providing direct service to the US.

In order to maintain its Category 1 rating, Serbia must continue to adhere to the safety standards of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation), the United Nations’ technical agency for aviation that establishes international standards and recommended practices.
