Dogs get new lease on life with low-cost wheelchair designed by Serbian man

When you lose a leg, life changes dramatically. And this is true for even dogs.

A canine wheelchair designed by a Belgrade engineer is gaining popularity in Serbia as one the first such solutions produced on a wider scale.

The designer got the idea when a car hit his pet, a three-month puppy called Mica.

Dragan Dimitrijevic, Canine Wheelchair Designer: “My pet was injured (by a car), and needed spine surgery and after such operation “Mica” could not walk. I watched her suffer, crawling on the floor, so one day my daughter said to me that on the internet there was something produced in the U.S. and we saw it (canine wheelchair).”

The specialised dog wheelchairs he found online were very expensive, so he decided to make a similar and cheaper device himself in his workshop.

The news of his wheelchair spread fast and so far he has produced some 100 customised wheelchairs, with most of them bought by dog owners across the former Yugoslavia.

Dragan Dimitrijevic, Canine Wheelchair Designer: “A great number (of canine wheelchairs) goes to Croatia, less to Slovenia, Bosnia, much less to Macedonia, but (we send) to almost all, let’s say, ex Yugoslav republics, everywhere.”

It may not be the most sophisticated system in the world, but for these dogs, they get a chance to keep on moving forward.
