Exports of companies operating in Serbia’s IT sector came to approximately USD200m last year, Vojvodina ICT Cluster CEO Milan Solaja announced on March 2. At a presentation of a study on the ICT sector in Serbia, BETA news agency quoted Solaja as saying IT was the Serbian economy’s healthiest sector, because it was rooted in private initiative.

“A relationship between investment in the IT sector and a country’s economic progress has been proven, because things are done faster, better and to a higher quality,” Solaja said, who added that the IT sector was growing very quickly and becoming increasingly successful.

One of the authors of the study, Milovan Matijevic from the Belgrade Mineco company, said that although approximately 1,500 IT firms in Serbia accounted for 5% of GDP they only accounted for 1.5% of the total number of companies in Serbia. He also said that the IT sector’s market value had begun to recover after years of stagnation, and that its value had increased from EUR404m in 2010 to EUR479m in 2011.
