The Secretariat of the European Energy Community (EC) called on the authorities of the member states, including Serbia, to review in detail, ie limit subsidies to the coal sector.
As published on the EC website, in a letter to all national authorities providing state aid, the Secretariat warns them to assess measures regarding their compatibility with the acquis in this area.
– The contracting parties have repeatedly committed themselves to fully apply and implement legal norms regarding the limitation of state aid for coal-fired thermal power plants, as stated in the conclusions of the Council of Ministers of December 17, 2020 – reminds the EC. – Under the Energy Community Treaty, the parties must ensure that any subsidy that distorts or threatens to distort competition is prohibited by favoring certain companies or energy sources.
State aid, they warn, can distort competition and affect cross-border energy trade, which is why controlling state aid is crucial to establishing a regional energy market, Novosti reports.
