Serbia and Albania will sign a protocol for the construction of a EUR 1 B motorway that will link Nis with the Adriatic port of Durres, Serbia’s Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Zorana Mihajlovic said on Saturday.

The document will be signed within the next 15 days by Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic and his Albanian counterpart Edi Rama who discussed the construction of the motorway during Vucic’s two-day visit to Albania earlier this week, Mihajlovic said on state-run Serbian TV channel RTS.

The motorway will stretch from Nis to Merdare in Serbia, through Pristina in Kosovo, before reaching Tirana and Durres in Albania.

The project is extremely important because it will enhance the entire region’s integrity and political stability which are prerequisites for economic stability, Mihajlovic said. For landlocked Serbia the motorway will also provide access to Albania’s Adriatic ports, she added.

A project for the construction of the motorway is currently being drafted. It will be unveiled in Vienna in August.
