Serbian energy firm NIS and China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) are interested in developing a 700 MW thermal power project in Serbia, news agency Tanjug quoted energy minister Zorana Mihajlovic as saying. She was speaking at a news conference on Sept 13 after a meeting between government officials and company representatives. The two firms are interested in executing exploration works at the Kovin plant, where a new coal mine and a new thermal power unit should be built. NIS and CMEC intend to build two units of 350 MW each. According to Mihajlovic, the construction of the new plant could start after one year at the earliest. She added the Kovin project is among the priority investment projects in the Serbian energy sector. Experts estimate that the new plant could meet a third of the energy needs of Serbia’s northern province of Vojvodina. According to earlier exploration works, the estimated coal reserves at the location total some 276 million tonnes and are enough for a 35-year period exploitation.
