The overhaul of Block B2 at the Kostolac B thermal power plant has been successfully completed, with the 350-megawatt unit back online, EPS announced. According to Dušan Živković, General Director of EPS AD, the repairs and revitalizations are proceeding as planned, ensuring readiness for the upcoming winter season and a stable electricity supply.

The announcement highlights that Block B1 is expected to return to operation in the latter half of September following its capital overhaul, marking the end of the overhaul season at Kostolac.

In May, the first overhaul of Block B1 since its revitalization in 2014 commenced. This major project is crucial for maintaining the safe operation of the 350-megawatt plant in the coming years.

“This overhaul will enhance the reliability, energy efficiency, and environmental performance of the units,” EPS stated, as reported by Tanjug. The company also noted that the repairs and renovations of Blocks A1 and A2 at TPP Kostolac A have been completed.

All overhauls are aligned with the major investment in the revitalization of the Bajina Bašta reversible hydroelectric power plant, which has been operational for 42 years. The first unit is expected to be completed this year, with the second unit to follow next year, contributing over 600 megawatts to the system and significantly improving energy security, according to the EPS General Manager.

Despite the ongoing drought, EPS has maintained a steady supply of electricity to both the economy and citizens during extreme temperatures. Summer consumption was approximately 15 percent higher compared to previous years, while hydroelectric production was about 30 percent lower than in 2023 due to unfavorable hydrological conditions, with many watercourses nearing biological minimum levels.
