Belarus-Serbia cooperation in banking sector viewed as promising

Belarus-Serbia cooperation in the banking sector looks quite promising, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he met with Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic on 26 January, BelTA has learned.

“Cooperation in the banking sector is another area that I believe has great prospects. Our Belarusian legislation allows for providing loans to a foreign importer. The Development Bank of Belarus set forth certain proposals, yet the project has not been approved yet. I think that Serbia, our Minsk Automobile Plant, and the Development Bank could revisit the project,” said Mikhail Myasnikovich. He added that Belarus would be grateful if the Serbian head of government gave instructions to promote export crediting.

The Chairman of the Council of the Republic also took note of good prospects in sci-tech interaction. Today the two countries are implementing five joint projects in the sector: nano-biostructures, digital images, radon maps, radiation doze assessment. Working in the abovementioned areas are the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Belarusian State University, and the University of Belgrade. We could have had more projects of the kind, Mikhail Myasnikovich stressed.

The Council of the Republic also praised the progress in economic cooperation between Belarus and Serbia. The political and parliamentary instrument steadily contributes to its development. In this respect, the free trade zone creates good conditions for industrial cooperation. The National Assembly has already ratified the corresponding protocol.

Mikhail Myasnikovich hailed the assembly plant of the tractor and automobile plants as a success. There are, however, certain difficulties with payments. The Chairman of the Council of the Republic added that the two countries can discuss new promising areas of cooperation. There is necessary groundwork and the political will for it. “We pin high hopes on your visit. We hope for new initiatives, new projects in every area of cooperation. The parliament will be creating comfortable conditions for the implementation of our agreements,” the Speaker noted.

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic thanked Belarus for its friendly attitude to Serbia. He noted that the Serbian people have the same respect to Belarus. Serbia is a sovereign country today and adopts a lot from Belarus.

The parties discussed the Belarusian-Serbian relations, including inter-parliamentary, trade and economic cooperation, and also the ways to improve the legal framework of bilateral relations.
