Serbian Minister of Economy and Regional Development Nebojsa Ciric stated that since the launch of the investment encouragement program, over 170 new companies have been opened and about 28,000 people got employed.

“Since the beginning of the program, we have managed to open about 28,000 jobs. I believe that the number of companies surpasses 170, since that was the number of projects, and these companies, including both foreign and domestic ones, are completely new,” Ciric said for the Monday edition of the Belgrade-based daily Pres.

He added that it is assessed that by the end of the year investments in Serbia will reach EUR 2.5 billion, Fiat’s investments included.

Ciric underlined that this will be the first year since the beginning of the crisis that Serbia will record an increase in the employment rate.

“This is a difficult job since the unemployment rate was continuously increasing from the end of 2008 to April 2010, and it now equals 19.4 percent. It is worrying that from January 2010 to January 2011, the number of employed was down by 92,000. Moreover, we believe that by the end of 2011, the number of new jobs will be greater than the number of the closed ones,” Ciric said.
