Russia’s RZD International completes Corridor X railway section upgrade in Serbia

Russian railway engineering company RZD International said on Monday it has completed the reconstruction of the Vranjska Banja-Ristovac railway section of the Trans-European transport Corridor X in Serbia.

The project included the full rehabilitation of more than 17 km of track line, laying of seven switches, reconstruction of eight road crossings and two railway stations and low platforms, drainage system works, rehabilitation of signalling and telecommunication systems, the Russian company said in a statement.

Reconstruction works were performed during 36-hour technological traffic breaks without full traffic stop. After the reconstruction, the maximum speed of traffic, which previously did not exceed 50 km per hour, can be raised up to 120 km per hour, RZD International said.

RZD International has completed the rehabilitation of two out of three southern sections of Corridor X so far.

Within the next few days, an external commissioning board will start its work on Bujanovac-Bukarevac railway section, which was completed earlier. After that, the object will be commissioned to the customer, Serbian state-run railway infrastructure operator, Infrastruktura Zeleznice Srbije, and a three-year guarantee period will start running.

The rehabilitation of the third section, Vinarci–Djordjevo, is on schedule, RZD International said.

The total cost of the project of reconstruction of the three sections stands at $38 million (40.3 million euro).

Corridor X is projected to connect Salzburg in Austria to the Greek port of Thessaloniki, passing through Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia.
