Serbia is one of the few countries in Europe that, in addition to its own needs, has sugar for export, and this year, with 42,000 hectares planted with sugar beets, production of more than 250,000 tons of sugar can be expected.

In the past, there were as many as 80,000 hectares under this culture in Serbia, and in recent years more than 20 sugar mills have been shut down in Europe, reminds agricultural expert Branislav Gulan and points out that today the state gives a subsidy of 35,000 diars per hectare planted with sugar beet.

Domestic needs are around 200,000 tons per year or 11 kilograms per inhabitant. They point out that it is important that the state recognized the need to subsidize sugar beet production at a time when sugar production in Europe is in crisis.
