At Nikola Tesla Airport, as of Tuesday, 3,146,171 passengers were recorded, while more than seven million are expected by the end of the year. This would be a record number of passengers that the Belgrade airport has ever served.

This year, Air Serbia increased the number of flights by 40 percent, Wizz Air by 109 percent, Fly Dubai by 193 percent, Turkish Airlines by 80 percent, and Austrian Airlines by 42 percent.

Air Serbia has increased the number of routes by as many as 43 in this summer season.

Petar Vojinović, editor of the specialized portal Tango Six, points out that the dramatic number of canceled Air Serbia flights on June 18, more than 10 percent for that day, was just a one-day incident.

On the other hand, the airport is under pressure from the state and the public, it obviously had to react and make up for the lack of employees in aircraft maintenance and baggage sorting.

“Air Serbia’s communication with which it countered interpretations that they were too ambitious with the flight plan is unusual. They emphasized that they had informed the airport about this in advance. My opinion is that Belgrade Airport and Air Serbia prepared in advance, but for both companies there were factors that affected business.

A large number of canceled flights were caused by the delay of additional leased Air Serbia planes, and on the other hand, the airport did not have enough employees. “The airport cannot find enough adequate workers, while Air Serbia lost four of the 10 planes they leased,” explains Vojinović.
