Serbia Must Make Better Use of Bumper Harvests

While the minister promises targeted help for agriculture, some experts say the reforms will miss their mark if they continue to neglect the needs of the small farmers who make up the bulk of producers.
This year, Serbia marked a record harvest of corn and wheat, with around 8 million tons of corn and 3.1 million tons of wheat produced.

Both corn and wheat are significant export products; around half of the wheat crop and a third of the corn crop are intended for export abroad.

However, the return for both producers and Serbia’s economy would be far greater if these record yields could be exported as finished products, not as raw materials.

For this reason, the government has announced its intention to reshape agricultural policy so that in the future finished and processed exports become the priority.

“Our idea is to strengthen the food processing sector and introduce new technologies so we can process the raw materials that we produce,” Branislav Nedimоvic, Minister of Agriculture.
