The Minister without portfolio in the Government of Serbia in charge of innovations and technological development, Nenad Popović, stated today that our country should build a nuclear power plant in order to ensure a stable electricity supply in the future.
Addressing the International Summit on Nuclear Technologies in Dubai, Popovic said that the need for electricity would increase by 50% in the next 15 years.
– Stable electricity supply is a condition for every country to develop economically, be independent and free. The most efficient way to ensure a stable and sustainable supply is the construction of a nuclear power plant – he said, the Government of Serbia announced.
According to him, wind and sun cannot replace nuclear energy, because nuclear power plants work 365 days a year, providing a stable and cheap supply of electricity for the economy and citizens.
The Minister stated that the construction of the nuclear power plant would significantly contribute to the increase of employment, because 10 to 15 jobs in related industries come to one job in the nuclear power plant.
These are above-average paid jobs and an opportunity to keep our young engineers in Serbia, Popovic pointed out and expressed the expectation that Serbia will talk to potential partners in this project in the coming period in order to achieve the best price and attract the best technologies.
Earlier today, the Minister held a bilateral meeting with the management of the Russian state corporation “Rosatom”, at which they discussed the construction of the Center for Nuclear Technologies in Serbia, which is expected to begin by the end of 2022.
He assessed that this center will significantly contribute to raising the capacity of Serbia in the field of medicine, and is especially important for oncology patients who, when the center is built, will be able to have all the necessary therapies in our country.
As he pointed out, the center is also important for the development of Serbian personnel in the field of nuclear technologies, in which Serbia once led in Europe.
The International Summit on Nuclear Technologies “Rosatom Week” is being held at the World Exhibition EXPO 2020 in Dubai from January 17 to 24, with the participation of numerous state officials, company executives and leading world experts and scientists in the field of nuclear technologies, eKapija reports.
