The coronavirus will not kill the Serbian food industry

Serbia’s food industry is not currently threatened, demand has increased, there are three shifts and raw material inventories are high, and the only thing that can negatively affect their revenues is a possible jump in input prices, agroeconomist Milan Prostran told eKapija.
According to him, freezing the prices of basic foodstuffs will not reduce producers’ revenue unless it increases the cost of fuel, electricity and depreciation.
– In the meantime, I hope this will not last, because if it happens, raw materials could be damaged, especially when it comes to fruit and vegetable gardens, which fortunately have not yet arrived – Prostran told eKapija.
Asked if we would have problems with export of cereals given the fall in prices in the world due to large reserves, our interlocutor said that situations such as this with the corona virus once again indicate the need to re-industrialize the food industry in Serbia.
– The Serbian food sector is mostly an exporter of raw materials, and every earthquake and crisis in the world food market is first felt by these producers. Our food industry has been destroyed for decades and is slowly recovering, but it has to turn to financial processing – Prostran concluded.
