The network of highways in Serbia is expanding – What is all planned?

About a thousand kilometers of fast roads are currently being designed and built in Serbia.
The Ministry of Construction recently presented the plan of the new road Belgrade-Zrenjanin-Novi Sad, and according to earlier announcements, by December 1, we should have as many as 8 highways under construction. A total of 16 expressways are also planned.
In May, the works on the construction of the Frushkogorski corridor began, and by the end of the year, or at the beginning of 2022 at the latest, the construction of the highway and fast road to Pozarevac should begin, then from that city to Veliki Gradiste, to Donji Milanovac.
Currently, road workers are active on the highway Cacak-Pozega, then on the construction of the Moravian corridor from Cacak through Krusevac to Pojat and the highway Kuzmin-Sremska Raca, and works are also being carried out on the highway Ruma-Sabac-Loznica.
Among the upcoming works is another important highway – the Sumadija corridor “Karadjordje”, and the construction of a 107 km long section of the highway from Pozega to Boljar to Montenegro is planned, which will speed up the journey to the Adriatic Sea, reports Blic.
The new highway Belgrade-Zrenjanin-Novi Sad currently has two alternative routes and both are located east of today’s Zrenjanin road, and the plan envisages two variants for the route of the open road and two variants of the bypass around Zrenjanin.
The total length of the highway will be about 110 kilometers, and more than 300,000 people live in the area that directly covers it. The estimated value of the construction is around 600 million euros. The route from Borca to Zrenjanin will be 58 kilometers long.
Near Belgrade, both variants of the route to Zrenjanin are included in the so-called Northern Tangent, where the new junction would represent the future entrance to the highway. From there, two possible directions develop that cross the Tamis, one east towards Jabuka, and the other north towards Opovo.
While the eastern primary route would pass closer through the municipalities of Jabuka, Crepaja, Debeljaca and Kovacica, the alternative route to the north would move towards the settlements of Glogonj, Sefkerin, Opovo and Baranda. The two directions then almost merge and continue through Idvor and Orlovata with smaller variations to Ecka and Zrenjanin.
The total length of the route from Zrenjanin to Novi Sad is almost 47 kilometers. The new highway practically coincides with the route of the existing highway, and minor differences in the variants of this part of the route have no traffic significance.
By the way, the construction of the highway from Belgrade to Zrenjanin was first discussed in March 2019, and in January 2020 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed and the preparation of planning and technical documentation for the construction of the highway Belgrade (Borca) – Zrenjanin – Novi Sad with a Chinese company.
The section from Preljina to Pozega is considered by experts to be the most demanding on the Milos Veliki highway. The projected length of the section is about 30 kilometers, and in the trunk of the highway there are 30 bridges, six overpasses within the deviations (total length 555 meters), four overpasses within the loops (total length 1,600 m) and five bridges outside the highway length of 300 meters).
By breaking the tunnel in Trbusani, the builders are one step closer to Pozega. There are two more longer tunnels in front of them, and the builders claim that they will finish the work before the deadline.
In order to speed up the construction, the Chinese hired a larger number of Serbian builders, than the one envisaged by the agreement.
In Pozega, the projected section continues to the section Pozega-Boljare, which represents the connection with Montenegro, and to the section Pozega-Kotroman, which represents the highway connection with Sarajevo and whose design is in progress.

In four years, the Moravian Corridor should connect Cacak and Pojate, ie Corridors 10 and 11 in the length of 112.3 kilometers, but also all telecommunication devices along the highway. Thus, they will supply drivers with all information important for road safety, which will arrive from the traffic control center, and free internet will be available along the entire highway.
Work is currently underway on the section from Pojat to Krusevac, where workers have been active for several months at several dozen points. This section should be completed during 2022.
Construction of the highway to Sarajevo has begun
In December, the project of the highway Ruma – Sabac and the fast road Sabac – Loznica, with a total length of 77 km, was started.
The construction of the Belgrade-Sarajevo highway officially began at the end of August 2019 with the opening of a construction site on the Sremska Raca-Kuzmin section, about 18 kilometers long, whose value of works with the bridge over the Sava is 220 million euros. The deadline for construction is two and a half years.
The Sumadija corridor will be 220 km long
The highway “Vozd Karadjordje”, the so-called Sumadija corridor, will have a total length of about 220 km. This project is planned, and it is a fast road with two lanes in both directions, which will connect central and eastern Serbia, and will be named after the leader of the First Serbian Uprising. On one side, it will go along the route Mladenovac – Orasac – Arandjelovac, on the other Lazarevac – Arandjelovac, where it will connect, from where it will go further towards Raca, Svilajnac, Despotovac and Bor.
This road will have a direct connection with Corridor 10, ie the highway Belgrade – Nis, since it will intersect with it in the Markovac zone. The connection with Corridor 10 could be realized in the zone of Mladenovac, while near Lajkovac it should be connected with Corridor 11, ie the highway “Milos Veliki”.
Fast roads are also planned
In addition to highways, high-speed road projects have also been announced – Backi Breg-Sombor-Kikinda-border with Romania (175 km), Slepcevic-Pavlovica bridge (15 km), Kragujevac-Mrcajevci (33 km), Pozarevac-Golubac loop (70) km), Golubac-Donji Milanovac-Brza Palanka and Kladovo-Negotin (146 km) and Paracin-Zajecar-Negotin (140 km), Blic reports.
