The number of newly registered passenger cars in Serbia rose an annual 2.3% in the second quarter to 35,133 after climbing 20.4% in the previous quarter, the statistics office said in a statement. Out of all types of road vehicles and trailers, an increase was registered also at first-time moped registrations (up 16.3% y/y to 2,889 in Q2), special purpose motor vehicles (up 59.8% y/y to 537), agriculture tractors (up 28.5% to 1,869) and agriculture trailers (up 58.2% to 758). All other types of road vehicles and trailers such as motorcycles, lorries, road tractors, trailers and semi-trailers and motocultivators saw an annual decline in first-time registrations in the second quarter of 2012 as new bus registrations registered the steepest drop of 34.3% to 119. Back in the first quarter of 2012, the category of first-time bus registrations was the only one that showed a decrease (down 8% to 104).
The most preferred motor vehicle manufacturers so far this year have been Zastava (a local trademark) Fiat, Renault, Opel and VW, the statement said.
News agency Tanjug quoted the head of the Serbian association of car and car parts importers, Milos Petrovic, as saying last week that new car sales in Serbia shrank 40% in January-July, bringing the market to a historic minimum.
