Although Romania has five percent of Europe’s crude oil resources and the largest gas producer in Central Europe, the country imported about 33 percent of its gas and 66 percent of its oil from Russia. To counteract this dependence on fossil fuels, the country has set ambitious goals. By 2020, 24 percent of final energy consumption will be covered from renewable energy sources and energy production from renewable electricity generation, heat supply and cooling and fuel supply in the transport sector will be expanded further in 2020.

The Romanian potential for using renewable energy sources is large and the awareness of sustainable environmental and energy policy is increasing in the population, economy and politics. Foreign investment and know-how are also encouraged. Overall, the Romanian market will be in the future a growing renewable energy market.
