The Serbian government is exploring the expansion of its partnership with the Chinese company Huawei, which already operates in the country, as announced during a meeting between Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesić and a Huawei representative in Shenzhen, China.

“Huawei is already active here, particularly in high-speed railways, where their systems are used for signaling. I discussed potential enhancements they can offer for managing our highways and railways,” Vesić stated, as reported by eKapija. He emphasized that Huawei’s proposals would be evaluated, noting that the company’s technology effectively optimizes traffic flow, reduces costs, and leverages artificial intelligence.

“We are definitely open to further collaboration, especially regarding high-speed railways,” Vesić added.

He outlined the vision of managing all highways and expressways from a central location, enabling real-time monitoring of accidents, utilizing a comprehensive signaling system to alert drivers, and automatically rerouting traffic to prevent congestion. Additionally, drivers would receive weather-related updates. “This initiative is crucial for us as we aim to transform our existing 1,000 kilometers of highways into smart highways. By 2030, according to new European Commission directives, no vehicle produced in the EU will be allowed unless it can communicate with main road controllers regarding speed limits and driving behavior, which is vital for safety. We must prepare our highways accordingly,” Vesić explained. He also noted that new highways under construction in Serbia are being designed with smart technology in mind.
