A Year in Review: Dominant Sectors Fuel Serbia’s Economy While One Faces Significant Decline

Industrial production in 2023, compared to 2022, has increased by 2.5%, while compared to the average of 2022, it is higher by 8.1%, as announced today by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia.

Industrial production in December 2023 is 1.7% higher compared to December 2022.

Looking at sectors, in December 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, there was a growth of 6.9% in the sector of Supply of Electricity, Gas, Steam, and Air Conditioning, a growth of 2.6% in the Manufacturing sector, and a decline of 15% in the Mining sector.

Data on industrial production by purpose groups in December 2023, compared to the same month the previous year, show an increase in the production of capital goods (2.3%), intermediate goods, except for energy (2%), energy (1.9%), and non-durable consumer goods (1.6%), while a decrease was recorded in the production of durable consumer goods (1.3%).

The most significant impact on the growth of industrial production in 2023 compared to 2022 was attributed to the following sectors: Electricity production, Manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and preparations, Manufacture of computers, electronic, and optical products, Manufacture of basic metals, and Mining of metal ores.

The seasonally adjusted index of industrial production for December 2023, compared to November 2023, indicates a total growth in industrial production of 1.1% and a growth of 2% for the manufacturing sector.

The seasonally adjusted index of industrial production for December 2023, compared to the average of 2022, shows an overall growth of 4.4% for the industry and a growth of 2.6% for the manufacturing sector.

The production of small enterprises (with fewer than 50 employees) that are not covered by regular statistical surveys is monitored using a sample of selected units from the manufacturing sector.

When the assessment of industrial production from the sample of small enterprises is included, industrial production in December 2023, compared to the average of 2022, is higher by 8.1% for total industrial production and 3.5% for the manufacturing sector.

Data on industrial production in 2024 will be published on the last working day of the month and will relate to the previous month, as stated by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS).
