The American-Dutch consortium Comico Oil, which operates the namesake company in Belgrade, is interested in building an oil refinery in Smederevo.

A land spanning 113 hectares will be rented for the period of 99 years.

An opinion about that proposal should also be given now by the Smederevo Assembly.

– I don’t know how the aldermen will vote, but my suggestion is that the offer should be accepted at a session of the Assembly. I expect the project to be backed because it is in the interest of all citizes – said Smederevo Mayor Predrag Umicevic.

He stressed that the construction of a refinery would result in the creation of 500 new jobs, adding that many local companies would be engaged in the construction.

During the negotiations in August 2011, Comico Oil raised the price of the land rent from USD 4.5 million to about USD 9 million, which is, as the mayor underlined, above the market price.
