The Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) is one of the few successful regional initiatives with tangible results over the past 10 years and more, Serbian Minister of Trade Rasim Ljajic said Wednesday.
The CEFTA countries are Serbia’s second largest foreign trade partner – second only to the EU – and Serbia now has a 2.1 bln euro surplus with the CEFTA countries.
Ljajic: GMO law obstacle to Serbia’s WTO accession
There is great public opposition to amending Serbia’s GMO law, which is a condition for accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Serbian Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic said on Wednesday.
“Over the short term, I am not very optimistic because there is great public pressure and opposition to changing anything. However, 163 countries are WTO members, and Russia joined two years ago. Twenty-five countries that are not are in the accession process, and only 13 countries in the world are not in the accession process. So not joining the WTO would be a great pity,” Ljajic told reporters.
