In the future, Serbia will settle tax debts with property

Amendments to the Law on Tax Procedure and Tax Administration, which is currently in the parliamentary procedure, debtors will be able to settle their obligations, if they exceed 400 thousand euros, by giving property. How and under what conditions, the Government of Serbia will still define, Vecernje Novosti writes.
Citizens will be able to pay their taxes only in cases where the state estimates that it is interested in it.
“The intention is probably to facilitate the collection of parallel liabilities from large debtors, so that settlement can be done by taking over his assets. This would shorten the process of settling liabilities, avoid lengthy processes of forced collection and sale of assets,” said a member of the Tax Association Aleksandar Vasic.
Vecernje novosti also estimates that according to the “established, bad practice”, very important provisions remain unclear in the law, and the powers are transferred to the Government of Serbia, although in the procedure of public debate on proposals for amending the law “no at least a framework is given regulated by bylaws.”
The proposal states that the day of settling the tax liability through giving instead of payment is considered the day of verification of the agreement by which the act of the Government on the transfer of property to the ownership of the Republic was realized.
Acquiring property alone, if it is not put into function and does not satisfy the public interest, would not make sense, adds Vasic.
“The state already has significant property that is not being used or is not being used at full capacity,” Vasic said, Nova Ekonomija reports.
