Lower unemployment key goal

Minister of Finance and Economy Mladjan Dinkic said Monday that the government’s key goal is reducing the current unemployment rate of 24.1 percent to under 20 percent in the coming years.

At a conference entitled “Serbia Turns to Economy – Together Out of the Crisis” at the Hyatt Hotel in Belgrade, Dinkic said this requires public sector reform, a better business climate and, above all, better conditions for the growth of the private sector.

The success of any reform takes political and social consensus and as few obstructions as possible, said Dinkic.

The minister said the government has the preconditions for conducting reforms, because it has broad political support.

As far as the Ministry of Finance and Economy, Dinkic said he can guarantee that the problem of companies in restructuring will be resolved on time and that as of June 30 next year, there will be no companies with this status.

He said it is important to change the labor law, because fewer people are getting employment on account of the current rigid legislation. Dinkic said some of the unions mistakenly believe that that the current law protects workers rights, because it “also protects those who do not want to work.”

Dinkic said the Ministry of Finance and Economy will drastically reduce paperwork, and the Tax Administration will eliminate it altogether, because starting January 1, 2014 all payments will be made into a single account, and starting June 30 all tax receipts will be electronic.

As one of the most important projects in the coming months, the minister mentioned connecting small and medium businesses with large Serbian exporters, as well as tying incentives for investors to the involvement of domestic parts in production.
