McDonald’s Serbia sells chicken fed with GM food?

Chicken that “McDonald’s” has been selling for the last three months in Serbia in various products has been fed with genetically modified food, reported Serbian portal “Pistaljka”.

When asked by “Pistaljka” if “McDonald’s” is selling in Serbia products made of chicken that was grown with GM food, even though it is forbidden by the law, the company said that the majority of poultry comes from Europe, but that the soy used in nutrition originates from Brazil. Representatives of the company said, however, that their suppliers, since March this year, have not been able to confirm with certainty that there are no GM soy in poultry nutrition.

The law on GM foods in Serbia is very clear, writes “Blic”. Selling and cultivation of GM products is forbidden, and there are no exceptions. When asked by the daily what are further steps and whether “McDonald’s” would be banned from selling chicken products, having in mind that the law forbids everything that has any connection with GMO, the Ministry of Agriculture did not replied.

“Veterinary Directorate is the one who needs to establish traceability of production – if there is control of products resulting from the use of other products resulting from GMO technology. They should decide whether this is allowed,” Milan Prostran, agricultural-economic analyst told “Blic”.

Professor at the Faculty of Agriculture, Miladin Sevarlic, argues that this is a clear violation of the law.

“There are no scientific evidence that the meat of animals fed by GM food is not harmful to human health. Here trade and cultivation of GMO products is forbidden there is no dilemma about it. Besides, even if it was allowed, the question for them is why they do not have clearly presented information that this is GM food,” said Sevarlic, and added that it is scandalous that import of chicken grown with GM food is allowed in Serbia, and domestic capacities in poultry remain unused. He also criticized the Natonal Council of Biosafety for its silence on the matter.
