NIS Business Operations 2023: A Close Look at Nearly 40 Billion Dinar Capital Expenditures

In 2023, NIS initiated the implementation of a new ambitious investment program, and the total volume of investments by the NIS Group in the previous year amounted to 39.2 billion dinars, which is a 77 percent increase compared to 2022. Regarding key events in 2023, it should be emphasized that, in accordance with the Strategic Partnership Agreement with the Republic of Serbia, NIS became the majority shareholder of HIP Petrohemija last year and commenced preparations for the modernization of the domestic petrochemical complex.

In 2023, the average price of Brent crude oil on the global market was $82.6 per barrel, which is 18 percent lower than in 2022. The operational and financial results of the NIS Group in 2023 were in line with the fluctuations in the global oil market prices, as well as the market needs in which the NIS Group operates. In accordance with these trends, the EBITDA indicator of the NIS Group in 2023 amounted to 68.1 billion dinars, while the net profit was 44.2 billion dinars.

NIS has remained one of the largest contributors to the budget, considering that the accrued obligations for taxes and other public revenues amount to 244.4 billion dinars.

In terms of operational indicators, the total volume of oil and gas production has remained almost the same, as in the comparative period – 1.158 million metric tons of oil and gas. The volume of crude oil and semi-finished product processing at the Oil Refinery in Pančevo in 2023 was 4.092 million tons, or 7 percent less than in 2022. The total volume of trade in oil derivatives was 4.0 million tons, which is 8 percent less compared to the previous year. It is important to note that during the past year, NIS put into operation 10 new and reconstructed petrol stations in Serbia, including the most modern highway facility, the “Sokolići 2” petrol station on the “Miloš Veliki” highway. The petrol station “Lukavica” in Bosnia and Herzegovina was also commissioned.
