The Government of Serbia has announced the adoption of a Memorandum of Understanding with the French Electric Power Company (EDF), as revealed by the Ministry of Mining and Energy. This memorandum aims to establish a framework for long-term dialogue and collaboration in the realms of energy transition and low-carbon technology.

Minister Dubravka Đedović Handanović highlighted that the Memorandum lays the groundwork for a strategic partnership with EDF, particularly in evaluating the potential for Serbia’s civil nuclear program. The partnership also involves support for professional development and the exchange of technical expertise.

Furthermore, EDF has expressed interest in collaborating with Elektroprivreda Srbije on the development of new hydropower plants and the modernization of existing ones. The memorandum outlines potential cooperation in energy storage solutions, such as batteries and green hydrogen, as well as strategies for optimizing energy utilization.

In discussions with French Ambassador Pierre Košar earlier today, Minister Đedović Handanović emphasized the preparations for Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s forthcoming visit to French President Emmanuel Macron and the prospects for energy cooperation between the two countries. She acknowledged the shortage of nuclear energy experts in Serbia due to the moratorium on nuclear energy but emphasized ongoing discussions with relevant domestic institutions to enhance capacities for future projects.

Furthermore, Minister Đedović Handanović highlighted the opportunity to attract educated young professionals back to Serbia, reinforcing the country’s energy security by developing new capacities in the years to come.
