Slovenia is ranked the highest position among the countries of Southeast Europe (SEE) in terms of national innovation systems, followed by Turkey and Serbia, the European Commission announced.
Slovenia is followed by two non-EU countries, Turkey and Serbia, while Romania and Bulgaria are the only EU members in the group of modest innovators, with a score below 50% of the EU average, the European Commission announced in the latest edition of its annual table on innovation in Europe.
However, Slovenia was the only country in the group of 12 moderate innovators to record a 9.9% decrease in results due to the deteriorating performance of new doctorates.
Serbia’s performance was particularly strong as the country increased its score by 13.2% due to strong broadband penetration. Turkey improved its score by 12.5%, and together with Slovenia is the only SEE country in the group of moderate innovators.
Montenegro, which is included in the table for the first time, and Northern Macedonia are among the modest innovators, although their results increased by 5.0% and 14.8%, respectively, Kamatica reports.
