The managing board and shareholders’ assembly of Jat Airways has given the green light for a strategic partnership with United Arab Emirates’ Etihad Airways.

Beta news agency reported it had learned this at Jat on Tuesday.

Acting General Manager Velibor Vukašinović said that Etihad would take over a 49-percent stake in JAt, which would change its name to Air Serbia.

Vukašinović further said that the Serbian airline’s shareholders’ assembly had authorized him to sign the transaction contract on the Etihad deal along with six riders.

“This is the beginning of a strategic partnership with Etihad,” Vukašinović said, noting that the Serbian government would continue to control a 51-percent stake in the company.

Vukašinović added that between 300 and 500 employees should leave the Serbian airline under a social program.

However, he also stressed that the company needed to hire 100 pilots and 100 flight attendants, Beta reported.
