Serbia has become the 137th member of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced.
The platform aims to strengthen the link between science and policy in the field of biodiversity and ecosystem services, in order to preserve and sustainably use biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development, “through the acquisition of new knowledge, thematic assessment of biodiversity, support for biodiversity policy and capacity building.”
“One of the main roles of the Platform is the global assessment of the state of biodiversity, ecosystems and services they provide to society, as well as the development of special thematic and regional assessments, while strengthening the role of science and profession in decision-making at the level of global biodiversity policies.”
The platform helps member states accelerate progress in meeting key international obligations stemming from the Sustainable Development Goals, the global Aichi goals of the UN Biodiversity Strategic Plan 2011-2020 and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the ministry said, Nova Ekonomija reports.
