The energy sector is the most important industry in Serbia, with a constant growth rate, Skundric said at the 20th World Petroleum Congress in the capital city of Qatar.

The Serbian delegation is actively participating in the congress for the first time since the World Petroleum Council was founded.

Stating that a powerful investment cycle in the energy sector started two years ago, Skundric announced that in the next eight years about EUR 10 billion will be invested in power engineering and approximately EUR 2 billion in the oil sector.

More than EUR 2 billion will be invested into the gas sector and renewable energy sources, he said, adding that Serbia’s strategic orientation, concerning energy, is to become an EU member and realize the most significant energy projects through partnerships with Russia, China and many other countries.

The primary energy supply in Serbia amounts to 14.5 million of tonnes of oil equivalent a year.

The energy production in Serbia is based on domestic resources which cover 65 percent of the total needs, while the remaining 34 percent of energy sources, especailly gas and oil, is imported, Skundric said.

Serbia has about 10.6 million tons of proven reserves of crude oil, 41 million tons of balance reserves and 30.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas reserves.

Skundric also said that the country is rich in oil shale, the reserves of which are around 10 billion tons, and that the biggest basin is the Aleksinac basin, with around 1.2 billion tons of oil shale reserves and a potential oil content of around 210 million tons.
