StarTech: Launch Pad for the Development of Artificial Intelligence in Serbia

In recent years, Serbia has become a research hub in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), focusing on algorithm development, machine learning, and the application of AI solutions in various spheres of life. Startups and tech companies play a pivotal role in AI development in Serbia.

These enthusiastic entrepreneurs harness their creativity and expertise to develop AI products and services that address real-world issues. From healthcare applications aiding in diagnostics to agricultural analytics systems and business process optimization software, these innovators showcase the power of artificial intelligence in tackling complex challenges.

The StarTech project has been instrumental in assisting numerous endeavors, supporting over 80 innovative ideas in three years, around half of which were centered on artificial intelligence. Among them is Deep Netts, a company developing a platform that integrates a set of tools for AI development and provides project templates and procedures for machine learning model development based on best practices. This enables users without expert knowledge in these fields to utilize the platform effectively. Zoran Å evarac from Deep Netts mentioned that with the help of the StarTech project, they were able to accomplish many tasks more swiftly and have signed contracts with partners in America.

He explained that their product’s primary limitation addressed is enabling non-expert programmers in AI to develop and apply models using their existing knowledge. For instance, the University of Minnesota significantly shortened the drug testing process and saved chemicals using their product.

Artifit, also a recipient of a grant under the StarTech program, pursues a similar path. They are developing a product that enables a more accurate and efficient management and planning system for energy ecosystems, spanning production, consumption, and electric power transmission for producers, operators, and traders. The innovation lies in leveraging artificial intelligence, automation, and processing extensive data through machine learning, ultimately providing improved prediction, operational excellence, and analytics. This aims to reduce costs for end-users and create opportunities for competitive advantage. Željko Vujinović from Artifit emphasizes that the support they received significantly contributed to expediting the completion of their product.

StarTech project is a three-year initiative worth five million dollars launched in late 2020 by Philip Morris, NALED, and the Serbian government. Its main objective is to support innovation development and digital transformation among small and medium-sized enterprises in Serbia. The project aims to transition from a traditional to a digital economy, providing financial resources, expertise, and improving conditions to foster innovation and promote domestic innovative businesses. In its third cycle, recently concluded, 25 innovations in fields like machinery and electronics, agriculture and food, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology received grants.

The project’s continuation for the next three years has been announced, continuing its support through grants and enhancing the regulatory framework for innovators’ operations. Additionally, StarTech has offered practical advice and found a regular spot on national television through the GOStudy series, focusing on digital entrepreneurship.
