Sugar producers in Serbia are endangered by hyperproduction in the EU

Large sugar production in the European Union affects Serbian producers. Since the abolition of agricultural sugar quotas in the EU, there has been an overproduction of this strategically important food raw material in the member states, it was heard at the promotion of the study “Sector analysis of the sugar branch in Serbia” prepared by the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade.

Representatives of companies and line ministries talked today about models on how to improve the sugar industry sector in the coming period.

– Large quantities of sugar led to a drop in the price of the finished product, which greatly affected the position not only of our industry but also in the environment – said Aleksandar Bogunovic, Secretary of the Association for Plant Production and Food Industry PKS. – Recommendations are to maintain the existing customs rates on sugar imports, to enable long-term lease of state land, and as one of the indirect measures, support is proposed to producers in the construction of irrigation systems for areas under sugar beet.

Also, sugar beet producers would be helped by directly targeted subsidies, resolving issues in the field of application of special pesticides and the establishment of a support fund in order to be able to meet the conditions from Chapter 27 for Serbia’s accession to the European Union, Novosti reports.
